Hullster Motorsports: A History

Hullster Motorsports is largely a family operation, which includes seventeen family members and several non-family members. Whether cooking desserts for race day, vacuuming out the car, cheering from the stands, helping in the pits or garage, all are involved with the team in one way or another.

Hullster Motorsports was "officially" established on Saturday, March 24, 2001, when John & Deb Hull and Kim Marsh finalized a mutual life-long dream and purchased a race car. Plans had been in motion for about one year and on that day they picked up their car!

The 2001 racing season at Berlin Raceway in Marne, Michigan, was not only Hullster Motorsports' first year, but also Dave Hull's rookie driving year in the Sportsman division. Only a few minor mechanical changes were made to the car after it was purchased. The car was repainted using a new color scheme, and sponsers and the car number (#20) were added. It was finally ready to race!

The racing season started in April, with the 14th and 21st being "Test & Tune" days. Opening night was April 28th. Dave qualified 29th out of 42 drivers, which placed him in the consi (or B feature) race. In the heat race, he started 9th and finished 4th, but as he crossed the finish line, the motor blew, the back brakes locked up and he spun 180 degrees. Needless to say, he missed the consi race.

On June 16th, Dave qualified in 21st place and was in the pole position for the heat and consi races. He finished 2nd in the heat race and won his first consi race!!!

We finished the season 37th in points.

In 2002 we came out with a new paint scheme and colors: Green and Purple. We had a much better season with 3 top-10 finishes, and ended the season 20th in points.

Dave spent the third season driving an Eaglewood Racing-owned truck (#15). We started strong, qualifying 5th out of 37 cars on the first night of the racing season. Qualifying and racing remained strong throughout the season with 6 top-10 finishes, including 1 top-5, 1 Hard Charger award, and ended the season 19th in points.

In 2004 we decided to go on our own again and purchased a new chassis. This race car was built by our crew from the chassis on up. We stayed with the same colors as in 2002 but went with a new paint scheme. This turned out to be our best season to date, with a total of 18 top-10 finishes, including 10 top-5s. We finished 2nd twice, won a Hard Charger award, and finished the season 7th in points.

2005 found us continuing on our own, with a goal of finishing at least 5th in points. We were close but missed that goal, again finishing 7th in points for the season. On May 21st, Dave captured his first career Feature win. That was an exciting night! The season concluded with 18 top-10 finishes, including 7 in the top-5.

2006 was our best points finish yet, ending the season 6th in points, with 5 top-5s and 18 top-10s.

In 2007 we finished 8th in points with 10 top-5s and 15 top-10s, including 2 Feature wins (May 12th and September 21st).
